Every Teacher Has Them

Good Question
I was teaching a lesson on the different meanings of to, two and too and then gave a short quiz on our lesson. One of my students raised her hand and asked me kindly, "Which one do you recommend?"

Thesaurus Rex
In trying to get my second grade students to write more descriptive stories and poems, I decided to introduce them all to a thesaurus. Immediately, one of my students asked, "Mr. Hellman, what kind of dinosaur is that?

Stage Fright
In preparing my third grade students for a field trip to see a production of the musical Annie, I began explaining the differences between a movie theater and a live-performance theater. One of my students cried out, "Mrs. B, I don't want to go to a theater! I'm too scared!" In response to my asking why she was frightened, she replied, "Wasn't President Lincoln shot in a theater?"

A Cat of a Different Color?
One fine spring day toward the end of a year of experimenting with my hair color, three third grade girls approached me on the playground. "Mrs. Kelly," they began, "We were wondering, what color is your hair, really?" Encouraging an inquiry approach, I responded, "I'm not really sure, but that's an excellent question. What do you think?" The girls decided to give this question some thought and soon came running excitedly across the playground. "We know! We know!" they shouted. "You're a calico!"

Udder Honesty
During story time for a preK class, I seized an opportunity for vocabulary development with a book of beautiful illustrations of baby animals. Most of the children were familiar with the terms, "kitten" and "puppy." What to call a baby cow proved to be much more of a challenge. After incorrect answers from several students, one little girl raised her hand and announced that she would call the baby cow, "Sweetheart."
