Our readers speak out

Reaching for a dream
I read Katherine Romano's story about Joy Warner's school in Huntersville, NC ("A Wish and a Prayer," May 2004). Mrs. Warner is an angel, and so is her husband, for his support of her dream.

I'm a math/SAT tutor. I was a classroom teacher for four years, but I prefer smaller groups for learning. My dream, if I ever won the lottery, would be to start a school. That was a dream way in the back of my mind until I read about Joy Warner. I'd planned to write a math book for parents and children in grades two through six, but now that I've read about Mrs. Warner, I want to pursue this charter school idea a little longer.

I hope to travel to Huntersville to observe Mrs. Warner's school and learn about how she applied for charter status. Bless Joy Warner for caring for kids enough to start her own school and for being an inspiration for others – including me – to follow.

Another happy Lucky Subscriber
I was very surprised and pleased to find out that I won books from Edupress' "Two Can Read" series ("Teaching Talks," March 2004). What a generous gift! I'm going to use the books in my classroom. Thank you very much.

An old friend moves on
I was never lucky enough to be an official, prize-winning Lucky Subscriber, but now, as I begin my second year of retirement, I have decided – after receiving almost 200 issues of Teaching K-8/Early Years – not to renew my subscription.

However, since I was lucky enough to be the subject of your March 1989 cover story ("Richard Siegelman: A Teacher Who Makes Things Happen"), I want to again thank you for that honor, as well as for all the Publisher's Memos, "Teaching Talks" columns, inspiring articles, activity ideas, etc.

Keep up the good work for all the still-active teachers out there.

A handful of thanks
I'm a first grade teacher at Stourbridge Elementary School in Honesdale, PA, where I work with your "Teaching With Your Librarian" columnist, Sandy Meagher. I'm grateful to Sandy for including my "Handful of Reading Strategies" program in her column ("A Summer Assortment," May 2004).

It was exciting to see my idea in Teaching K-8. Teachers from several different states have called me about the program. I appreciate the opportunity to share my idea with teachers across the country.

Address correction
On page 110 of the August/September 2004 issue of Teaching K-8, the Internet url in the Teaching Ink advertisement should read www.teachers-teachingink.com Teaching Ink regrets the error.

Center Enterprises correction
The headline of the Center Enterprises advertisement on page 105 of the August/September 2004 issue of Teaching K-8 should have read "Paint/Ink Pads for Direct Skin Contact!" The word "Pads" was inadvertently omitted. Teaching K-8 regrets the error.
