Sabuda-Reinhart Pop-Up Exclusive for Teaching K-8
Jessica Rae Patton, Associate Editor
When Teaching K-8 asked Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda to design a pop-up especially for our readers they didn't hesitate to say yes, despite their beyond-busy schedules. Both artists have been creating with their hands since they can remember and love nothing more than encouraging kids to do the same. We soon received our very own menacing T. Rex to be shared by teachers with their students or for kids and their families to download, cut and fold at home.

With the popularity of their latest collaboration, Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs (Candlewick Press, 2005), it's easy to understand why Robert and Matthew have dinosaurs on their minds…but this fascination with animals of all sizes and time periods is nothing new. "I've been an animal and dinosaur lover my whole life," Matthew told us. "That's what I think I drew first." His parents supported his excitement for biology and zoology, which he went on to study in college, but he also took art classes and always drew. His parents encouraged him to go to medical school, but his desire for a career in art won out. "My biology degree has definitely helped a huge amount with the books we write, though," he noted.
As for Robert, he crafted pop-ups as a kid from whatever he could find, primarily old manila folders his mother brought home from work. "Computers are an amazing tool [for art] but I think a lot of kids today...they're saturated with technology," he said. "I can't say that's a bad thing but by the same token, I think it's really important for kids to understand that so much creative work can be done just with your hands." Robert and Matthew commented on all the great pop-ups that their readers have brought to book signings or sent them.
