Teaching Pre K-8 :

About Teaching Pre K-8

Our print magazine, Teaching K-8, is published eight times during the school year: August/September, October, November/December, January, February, March, April and May by Early Years, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Highlights for Children, Inc.

Professional Development
This section of the magazine began as a letter from the U.S. Secretary of Education to our readers back in 1992. Since that time, various key educators have authored columns in this section, providing readers a direct approach to professional development matters in every issue of Teaching Pre K-8. Currently featured columns are Your First Year and Best Practices.

Features
Every issue of Teaching K-8 features a school story and interview with an author or illustrator, and rich curriculum for best practice.

  • School Story Teaching Pre K-8 staff visits every school for our cover story, complete with pictures to provide a window into the life of the school.

  • Author Interview – All of our interviews are personal visits with children's book authors and illustrators with information that helps the student and classroom teacher learn more about the authors of children's literature.

  • Articles – Every issue has a curriculum focus with 3-5 features, written by classroom teachers, which detail lessons and best practice strategies for using curriculum in the classroom.

Departments
Departments are regular columns on all the major content areas, written by our columnists. Our columnists are classroom teachers who share their experiences and expertise in the content areas to write columns for each issue of Teaching Pre K-8. All of the Departments are authored by the same educators in every issue. Our goal is to provide consistent, best practice strategies and curriculum topics for the classroom teacher each month.

Online Extras
Our columnists and contributing writers have so much to share that we now offer Online Extras, which consist of worksheets, activity guides, reproducibles and extra content or website resources that support our articles in print.

Your Green Pages
Teachers keep coming back to these! Teachers will find more than 50 ready-to-use skill-building activities with each issue for primary grades, middle grades, and intermediate grades. There are even several parent activities each month – perfect to add to your weekly homework folder or monthly newsletter. Every activity is categorized by content area skill.

Technology in Your Classroom
Every issue includes a technology section with the latest educational software, web resources and curriculum for using technology in the classroom.

  • Blue Ribbon Reviews – Here, educators will find product reviews of software, web subscription services and hardware that will integrate into the curriculum and help support student achievement. The "Quick Tech Picks" highlight three "not to miss" products in a mini-review with product information.

  • Hot Websites – These web resources are editor top picks and usually have a curricular focus to match the issue month. A "Tech Spotlight" highlights a featured technology innovation.

  • How To ... – This column takes an in-depth look at an element of technology and provides tips and resources for implementation in the curriculum. A variety of lesson ideas and activities are often included, along with resources from the web to support the content. How To includes a reproducible that can be photocopied or downloaded from the Teaching Pre K-8 website to use as a student guide.
