Today's Classroom Activities :

A Real Page Turner

On the Stands
Reading Have each student bring in his or her favorite magazine, be it a teen girl magazine, a football magazine or a video game magazine. Discuss how to do an analysis. For what audience is the magazine written? What are its strengths? Its weaknesses? What kind of advertising does it contain? Why? What is the cost of the magazine? Is it worth it? Why or why not? Provide an opportunity for students to trade magazines for a little while, then compare the magazines. Why are there so many different magazines for sale on the newsstand?

I've Got It Covered! Creating Magazine Covers to Summarize Texts
The lesson begins by asking students to examine a magazine and discuss the ways in which the magazine cover's headlines and graphics express the main ideas of its articles. They then review a chapter in a content area textbook and use an interactive tool to create a magazine cover that summarizes the textbook information.

Sports Writer
Students write and illustrate magazine articles and ads that reflect the information they gathered through research.

Autobiographical Magazines
Students will apply the four modes of writing to create an autobiographical magazine to present to the class. Students will design a collage cover using pictures to express events in their lives.

"Me" Resource
Students create "Me" entries for a dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, newspaper.
