Today's Classroom Activities :
Counting Coins
Canister Coins
Math Gather empty film canisters, label each one for a particular coin. Place a pile of coins in the learning center for children to sort into the appropriate container. Allow students to take canisters home to practice sorting their parents' loose change.
Fun with counting coins
The students will learn to match a quarter, penny, nickel, and a dime to the amount specified throughout activities. They will learn that we use these coins everyday of our lives. By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to look at a coin and tell what it is called and how much it is worth.
Tallest Stack Wins
Students build a stack of pennies as tall as possible, recording the number of pennies they are able to stack before the tower falls. Then, sharing answers, they determine the average number of pennies that could be stacked.
Money Counts
Students will count and compare amounts of money less than or equal to one dollar.
Coin Toss Probability Lesson Plan
Students flip coins and use spreadsheets to record how many times they land on heads or tails.
Parents Activity
Math Put a small pile of change on the table. Select a few coins, perhaps 35 cents, then ask your child to show you how he or she can be richer or poorer by counting out more or less money. Write monetary amounts on small cards. Ask your child for more or less.
