Today's Classroom Activities :
Hurricane Season
Name that hurricane! The World Meteorological Organization assigns a male or female name to each hurricane. Write a paragraph explaining the name you would select for the next hurricane and why.
Hurricane Watch!
To your students, this time of year probably means new friends, new books, and new and exciting adventures. But to meteorologists, the late summer signifies an adventure of another kind. It's the peak time of the Atlantic hurricane season. This week, Education World presents activities designed to help your students understand this powerful force of nature.
The Eye of the Hurricane introduces students to the structure of a hurricane, particularly the eye. Students can view a video about hurricanes, do a simple hurricane simulation, take a tour into the eye of a hurricane, and write reports about their tour.
Monitor the National Hurricane Center for new Atlantic storm advisories. Read the latitude and longitude of the storms from the advisories. Mark the coordinates on the chart. Keep checking the advisories to see how the positions of the storms change with time.
