Impressionist and their Works of Art
Sponge Strokes
Art Display examples of impressionistic paintings and identify the artists. Have your students describe the paintings. Then have them create their own impressions of scenes around them. Provide aluminum pie tins containing several colors of fairly thick tempera paint. Give each student several 1-inch sponge cubes (one sponge for each color of paint). First, students practice different sponging techniques on scrap paper. Then, using the sponges, they can quickly paint their scenes.
Painting Like an Impressionist
This is an activity that teaches the basic techniques of painting like an Impressionistic artist. This activity will discuss the different rules that need to be followed in order to be considered an Impressionist.
Impressionism—Claude Monet
Students will learn about Impressionism through the works of Claude Monet, gain an understanding of the Impressionistic movement in art, study Impressionism painting on a field trip to the Art Institute in Chicago, and create an Impressionistic painting.

Impressionism
This lesson introduces students to the Impressionistic art movement, will teach them how to identify the aspects of traditional classical painting, they will also understand the aspects of impressionistic painting, and will be able to briefly identify the difference between post-impressionism and impressionism.
