Today's Classroom Activities :
Learning the Alphabet

Alphabet Popsicles
Reading Attach several large letters each to a ruler or popsicle stick. Assemble these, letter end down, in a can or other container. Hold one up, and as soon as the children see the letter ask them to think of a word that starts with that letter. Or, children could be asked to find an object in the room that begins with that letter and bring it to the front. Have a child then select the next stick from the can.
Alphabet Books for Everyone - They're not just for young children, and they often teach much more than A through Z.

Teach students to fingerspell. Find an animated ASL (American Sign Language) fingerspelling alphabet at asl.ms Go to library.thinkquest.org to print copies of the ASL alphabet. How does it help people communicate?

Get a laugh out of spelling scrambles by playing the online "Alphabet Soup" game at www.pbskids.org Afterwards, ask students to create their own spelling scramble jokes on trading cards.
