More Earth Day Lesson Plans

Earth Day Picnic
Social Studies To celebrate Earth Day on April 22 and reinforce lessons on recycling, reusing and reducing, have a school-wide picnic. Encourage students to pack their lunches in such a way as to generate a minimum amount of garbage. Award the class and/or students who had the least amount of garbage.

Earth Sounds
Music Bring in CDs of rain forest sounds, music set to the ocean waves, rain coming down and various other outdoor sounds. They are available in many places; start by asking at your local library and/or music stores. See if the students can identify any or all of the sounds before reading the label.

Global Sun/Temperature Project
Join schools from around the world from March 29 - April 30, 2010 as they determine how their geographic location (i.e. where they live) affects their average daily temperature and hours of sunlight.

Earth Day Every Day
Students will discuss environmental concerns, analyze these concerns, and offer practical remedies. Students will conclude by devising a project to implement the remedies and share the results with classrooms around the world.

Food and You
This lesson helps students understand how the food they eat can create waste and how humans (in this case, the students) generate waste.

Mixed Media Messages: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
In this lesson students will explore varied aspects of recycling. They will examine the process of recycling, identify and draw recycling symbols, create a mock television commercial focusing on the benefits of recycling, and create a stage set backdrop made of recycled materials.
