Today's Classroom Activities :
October is National Seafood Month
Fish Food
Science/Nutrition Health experts are recommending that Americans eat fish twice a week to improve overall health. October is National Seafood Month, a good time to take your students to the National Fisheries Institute site at www.aboutseafood.com Here they can find Fish Facts, Recipes, Games and Activities. They can also write fish-related questions to a dietitian. Use this site to begin a unit on seafood from around the world. Into what categories is seafood divided? Under what conditions is it harvested? What is the healthiest way to prepare it? Conduct writing activities about favorite seafood meals and fantasy writing about what it would be like to fish for King Crab off the coast of Alaska or tuna in the open sea.
KidSafe Seafood is a collaborative effort of chefs, pediatricians, and sustainable seafood experts to help parents serve more nutritious seafood to their children. Their goal is to provide the best information available about how to avoid the mercury and other pollutants that can be found in fish, along with guidance for making ocean-friendly seafood choices. Have your students research fish allergies and what the benefits are to eating more Omega-3s.
Have your students us the "Got Mercury?" calculator to help them make healthier seafood choices. They can enter their weight, the seafood type, the amount of seafood they will eat during a week, and get a calculation.
Your students can visit FishandKids.org where they can meet Murdock the fisherman’s cat whose name means protector of the sea. There are games, stories, and other characters which will help your students learn abouting saving our oceans.
