Sorting and Categorizing

Sort-a-Thon
Math Give each child a bag of small items such as coins, erasers, buttons, paper clips, crayons, etc. Call out a category ("Things you use at school," etc.) and set a timer for two minutes, during which the children will take appropriate items out of the bag. Put the items back into the bag and play again.

Sorting in math
The students will develop the skills to examine a group of objects and determine possible ways to categorize them, how to analyze and classify them and how to sort them into groups.

Word Sorts for Beginning and Struggling Readers
This lesson provides a framework for introducing students to short-vowel word families.

Egg Sorting
Students will learn to classify and sort eggs according to three criteria (size, color, and animal). Students will make qualitative observations and, as a group, will construct simple graphs.

Book Sorting: Using Observation and Comprehension to Categorize Books
This sorting activity addresses critical-thinking skills, observation and categorization processes, and reading comprehension and writing skills, while at the same time providing teachers with a vast array of diagnostics through observation of student interaction and conversation.
