Today's Classroom Activities :

Sorting Math Activities

Sports Sort
Reading/Math/Fine Motor Coordination Purchase a bag of foam sports-ball decorations at a craft store. Ask students to separate them into different containers according to sport, size or color. Encourage them to use the decorations in illustrations for stories about their favorite sport or about a memorable time they played an athletic game with a parent or friends.

Sorting in math
Students will examine a group of objects and determine possible ways to categorize them, classify them and sort them into groups. Students will also distinguish similarities and differences between objects, draw a bar graph using the data they found from sorting their show-n-tell items, and arrange the objects from largest to smallest.

Sort-a-Thon
Math Give each child a bag of small items such as coins, erasers, buttons, paper clips, crayons, etc. Call out a category ("Things you use at school," etc.) and set a timer for two minutes, during which the children will take appropriate items out of the bag. Put the items back into the bag and play again.

Sorting Beans
Counting and sorting different types of beans.

Rock and Sort
Math Collect 10 rocks. Use a permanent marker to number them from 1 to 10. Sort the rocks in different ways, largest to smallest, odd numbers and even, smooth and rough, etc.
