Today's Classroom Activities :

The Many Phases of the Moon

Earth and different versions of the Moon

Moon Tracking
Science/Art Check the phase of the moon in the daily newspaper and set up a chart for students to observe and record the changing of the moon. Provide art supplies that can be used to create the cycles of the moon. Allow for differing variations by encouraging students to include some part of their local environment in the drawings such as trees or tall buildings that are in sight when the moon is being observed. Record documentation for each sighting of the moon.

Phases of the Moon
Students use construction paper and coat hangers to construct lunar calendars, while learning about the different phases of the moon.

Moon Munching
Students will bite out the phases of the moon using Nilla Wafer cookies and keep a record of the phases of the moon in order by tracing the cookie pattern.

Blast Off! Vocabulary Instruction Using a Virtual Moon Trip
This lesson is designed to help first- and second-grade students learn new vocabulary by taking them on virtual adventures that replicate field trips. Students begin by accessing prior knowledge through an initial writing activity. Ensuing discussions, read-alouds, and the creation of a picture dictionary "take students to the moon," while further building their vocabulary. Students use an online Alphabet Organizer to complete a final writing activity, which they compare to the writing they did during the first session. Although this lesson focuses on the moon, its activities can be used with any content area topic.

Once In A Blue Moon
Students will use number theory skills to investigate when certain planets are aligned.

Teaching Day-by-Day: The Moon - The moon makes the perfect learning center. Expand and use the activities in the calendar for math, science, music and language arts fun and learning.
